A New Scam to Steal Your Car

I just returned from Florida and was advised of the following scam:

It seems that car thieves have found another way to steal your car without any effect at all. The thieves just look through the windshield of your car, write down the vehicle identification number ("VIN") from the label on the dash and go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN. After the key is made the thief returns to your car. He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes.

To avoid this, simply put some tape (electrical, duct or medical) across the VIN located on the dashboard of your car. By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you can cover it. It is a never ending battle!
