NewsNovember 2004A Squirrelly Case of Justice This vaguely reminds me of a Seinfeld episode, but even more bizarre, it is true. From the Associated Press in Harrisburg, PA, comes word that justice has prevailed and Nutkin the Squirrel can live out her later years indoors gathering Planter’s peanuts with her owners. It seems that Nutkin fell out of a tree in South Carolina but the couple who found her eventually moved to that bastion of tolerance, Pennsylvania, where it is illegal to keep wild animals as pets. Nutkin's owner Barbara Gosselin, was charged in 2002, yes, almost 3 years ago, after a game officer came across Nutkin while investigating a case of deer poaching. Senior Judge Joseph Hudock, in an 11-page opinion, yes, 11 pages, noted that "the Game Officer acknowledged that the squirrel was too old and too tame to be released in the wild." Gosselin's conviction was overturned and the judge ordered her $100 fine and costs be returned. |
