Privacy Notice

The Federal Government decreed recently that financial institutions have to tell their customers about how the financial institution will keep the customer's information private.  We don't think of ourselves as a financial institution, but the Federal Trade Commission has ruled that the phrase "financial institutions" includes lawyers.  So, the Federal Trade Commission requires that we give you this notice.

Since long before there was a Federal Trade Commission, we lawyers have had the privilege and the duty to keep secret the things our clients tell us.  That continues to be true.  That should be enough; but the Federal Trade Commission requires that we tell you certain things in a certain way.  The Federal Trade Commission calls these things our "privacy policy."  Our privacy policy is:
  1. In order to provide legal services to you, we collect nonpublic personal information from the following sources:

    • from you; and

    • from persons who provide you with services, such as physicians, accountants, banks and financial advisors; and

    • from your transactions with us, such as the bills we send to you and the payments you make to us.

  2. We do not disclose any nonpublic personal information about you to anyone unless:

    • you tell us to; or

    • a judge orders us to; or

    • the law permits us to; for example, if you were to be engaged in a lawsuit with us.

  3. Access within our firm to your nonpublic personal information is limited to we lawyers and our assistants.  We maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards that comply with federal regulations to guard your nonpublic personal information.
We may amend our privacy policy at any time.  If we do, we will notify our clients of any changes as required by law.
