Divorce and Life Insurance

and Pension Proceeds

If you have recently been divorced, you should make sure that you have changed your beneficiary designations for life insurance and pension plans.  According to a new United States Supreme Court decision, even if there is a law that automatically revokes beneficiary designations after a divorce, it is preempted by Federal ERISA.

If you are not sure, you should contact your plan administrator or your attorney immediately.
